Field Set For Inaugural Global Rallycross Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway
After a warm night of practice and qualifying on the lightning-fast, custom-built Global Rallycross course along the frontstretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the field is set for Saturday’s main event.
Four action-packed heat races will kick off the Global Rallycross season opener, featuring some of the fastest speeds in the history of Global Rallycross, tight hairpin turns and bumper-to-bumper race action through a series of chicanes and water features. Drivers will race four-wide, with the top two advancing to the second round.
Round 1 heats are as follows:
Heat 1A: Marcus Gronholm, Ken Block, Dave Mirra and Richard Burton
Heat 1B: Tanner Foust, Sverre Isachsen, Stephan Verdier and Patrick Moro
Heat 1C: Brian Deegan, Travis Pastrana, David Binks and Tim Rooney
Heat 1D: Toomas Keikkinen, Samuel Hubinette, Rhys Millen, Bucky Lasek and Andy Scott
The race not only marks the debut of Global Rallycross at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but also the start of the series’ 2012 season, bringing out the excitement in many of the drivers.
“Everybody’s sitting door handle to door handle on the grid, and it’s going to be like four missiles going off the line at one time,” said David Binks. “It’s spectacular.”
Binks said because every track is different, there will be a lot of unknowns about the race until the first heat takes to the three-quarter mile track, which winds through the legendary 1.5-mile superspeedway’s frontstretch and pit road. But those unknowns, while sometimes nerve-wracking for drivers, mean the ultimate in racing excitement for fans.
“There’s going to be so many lines in so many corners, as well as the real tight, twisty technical corners we’ve got, so I think the fans are going to get to see some fresh new racing that’s going to excite the drivers as much as the fans.”
The Global Rallycross event is part of a racing doubleheader, following the NASCAR Nationwide Series HISTORY 300. At the conclusion of the HISTORY 300, while track officials construct the Global Rallycross course, drivers like X Games stars Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra will be in the grandstands visiting fans and signing autographs.
Tickets are still available for all of Saturday's action. For as little as $25, fans can get one ticket for admittance into both events. Children 13 and under get in free.
