To kick off the celebration of the nation's 234th birthday, Charlotte Motor Speedway will host one of the area's first fireworks displays tonight during Fireworks Night as part of round four of the Kangaroo Express Summer Shootout Series.

The giant fireworks extravaganza will follow the traditional slate of Legend Car and Bandolero racing at approximately 10:15 p.m.

CRASHCars, the unique entry-level racing machines inspired by "CARS" movie creator John Lasseter, are also on the schedule.

Virtually any full- or mid-sized convertible, coupe or sedan can be transformed into a CRASHCar. Station wagons, limousines, Checker Cabs, El Caminos and even hearses are eligible while trucks and sport utility vehicles are not permitted.

The Kangaroo Express Summer Shootout Series features drivers from 8-year-old youngsters to Social Security recipients. NASCAR stars Kurt and Kyle Busch, David Ragan, Reed Sorenson and Joey Logano are among those who honed their skills in the 10-week series that runs every Tuesday night through August 10.

More than 150 cars jam the Summer Shootout Series pit area each week as two classes of Bandoleros and four divisions of Legend Cars battle it out on the frontstretch quarter-mile oval.

Tickets for the Kangaroo Express Summer Shootout Series are only $7 for adults, $3 for kids 6-12 and kids 5 and under are admitted free. All tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action at 5:30 p.m. Feature racing begins at 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude by 10:00 p.m.
