Format Set for Legends Million at Charlotte Motor Speedway; Unique Twist Adds More Excitement, Unprecedented Feature Payouts
Charlotte Motor Speedway today revealed the unique format for the largest grassroots race in history, the Legends Million, taking place at the Mecca of Motorsports July 15-17.
Earlier this year U.S. Legend Cars International and Charlotte Motor Speedway announced the Legends Million, a one-of-a-kind race featuring a total purse of $1 million with the Legends Million A-Feature winner guaranteed to take home a record $250,000. The final spot in the feature is assured $10,000. At least thirty competitors will race in the A-Feature event, which will be 100 laps with a 15-minute break at lap 50.
Competitors who register for the Legends Million must register in one of three divisions: Young Lions/Semi-Pro, Masters or The Legends Million, which is open to all drivers.
Each division will run heat races and an A-Main race, with the Legends Million A-Feature serving as the grand finale of the three-day event.
However, there is a twist in the A-Main races for the Masters and Young Lions/Semi-Pro divisions, the details of which will be released at a later date. The winners of those two division A-Main races will earn an UNPRECEDENTED $30,000 and $25,000, respectively.
“It’s going to be a ‘Deal or no Deal’ decision for those winners that will add drama and intrigue to this spectacular Legends Million race,” said Don Hawk, vice president of business affairs for Speedway Motorsports Inc. “We’re very excited to be able to offer this unique twist and incredible payout to our Masters and Young Lion/Semi-Pro competitors. It will give all registrants a chance to be in the Legends Million A-Feature race, no matter what their skill level and experience, and it will give everyone a shot at the $250,000-to-win purse.”
The only other domestic auto racing series that compete for a $1 million purse are the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide and IndyCar Series. With winner payouts for Legend Car feature races typically ranging from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars at a national event, the $250,000 that will go to the Legends Million victor is truly an unprecedented prize. Racers who finish in positions two through five will earn a record $100,000, $50,000, $25,000 and $20,000 respectively.
“The last-place finisher in the Legends Million A-Feature will walk away with $10,000, which is ten times what many Legend Car races pay the feature winner,” Hawk said. “Even the last place finishers in the Masters and Young Lions/Semi-Pro A-Mains will earn $1,000. Every grassroots racer needs to register for the Legends Million and take a shot at their share of this historic purse.”
The Legends Million will include Legend Car Series regulars, up-and-coming drivers and the sport’s top stars. To date, drivers from 28 U.S. states and Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are entered in this first-of-its-kind event.
