Goodguys Southeastern Nationals Brings 2,000 Classic Custom Automobiles to Charlotte Motor Speedway This Weekend
The infield of Charlotte Motor Speedway will be filled with thousands of classic hot rod roadsters and colorful custom masterpieces when the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals cruises into town Oct. 29-31. Below is a listing of some of the activities in which automotive enthusiasts of all ages can participate during the event weekend.
Goodguys Show Overview
The 17th annual Goodguys Southeastern Nationals is a giant outdoor event featuring more than 2,000 pre-1972 hot rods, custom cars, classics, muscle cars and trucks. Lil' deuce coupes, hot rod roadsters, chopped Merc customs, Hemi Cudas, Six Pack Challengers, Boss 429 Mustangs, Pontiac GTOs and many other specialty vehicles will be on display at the 1.5-mile superspeedway.
Also included in the national show are vendor exhibits, a swap meet, car corral area with vehicles for sale and many activities for children.
Car Registration up Over 2009, Enthusiasts From 30 States to Participate
More than 2,000 custom and modified cars from 30 states will descend on Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals. Advance car registration is currently up more than seven percent from 2009, meaning there will be that many more hot rods and custom machines at the speedway for spectators to enjoy.
Kids' Fun Includes Halloween Costume Contest, Model Building Area
There's plenty to do for the youngest of automotive enthusiasts during the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals. Kids can participate in the free Make-N-Take model building area at 1 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday in the Nationwide Series garage. To celebrate Halloween on Sunday, the Goodguys car show will provide trick-or-treating and a costume contest for all children in attendance.
Camping Available; The Speedway Club Open to Public
The Tom Johnson Camping Center Racing Resort at Charlotte Motor Speedway will be open for camping during the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals. Back-in sites are available for only $30 per night and include water, sewer and 30/50 amp electric amenities. Located just off Bruton Smith Boulevard, the Tom Johnson Camping Center Racing Resort is close to the speedway, a short drive from the shopper's paradise of Concord Mills and adjacent to the renowned Rocky River Golf Course. Poker Run to NASCAR Shops, Other Attractions to Launch Event
The Goodguys Southeastern Nationals will get underway in style on Thursday with a Poker Run. Show participants will arrive at the speedway a day ahead of the car show to participate in the Poker Run, which leaves Smith Tower at 9 a.m. en route to area NASCAR and hot rod shops and other attractions. The run concludes at 1 p.m. at Fatman Fabrications in Charlotte, N.C., with a weekend kick-off party.
Street Challenge Autocross to Test Man and Machine
The Goodguys Southeastern Nationals Street Challenge Autocross is taking place at 13 events across the United States, including Oct. 29-30 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Spectators can watch as Autocross participants put their street rod or truck through the paces to test their driving skills and see how their car handles in a performance situation. All participants will be timed and at the end of the event one winner from each of the Street Rod, Truck and Street Machine classes will take home an award. Autocross times are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Richard Petty Driving Experience Rides Offered Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Visitors to the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals show who want to experience Charlotte Motor Speedway up close can participate in a ride-along with the Richard Petty Driving Experience Friday night, Oct. 29, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Each ride-along participant will receive three laps in a NASCAR Sprint Cup-style stock car driven by professional instructors at speeds approaching 160 mph. NASCAR Industry Legend Don Miller to Sign Autographs for Fans Saturday at 11 a.m.
Don Miller, whose career as a drag racer and NASCAR mover-and-shaker is the subject of a new memoir, will meet fans and sign autographs Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Goodguys Big Rig. Miller, who rose from humble beginnings as a drag racer in Chicago to become Roger Penske's most trusted confidant and a mentor to NASCAR champions, is one of the most influential individuals in international autoracing. His book, "Miller's Time," was co-authored by Miller himself and automotive historian and Hemmings Publishing's senior editor Jim Donnelly.
Cruise Under the Lights Set for Saturday Night at 6 p.m.
On Oct. 30, hundreds of hot rods and customs will take to the 1.5-mile race track for several laps from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Cruise Under the Lights. Cruise tickets are available on the first floor of Smith Tower for car show participants. Spectators are invited to watch the cruise from the speedway's frontstretch grandstand or while dining in The Speedway Club.
Awards Show to Close Event Sunday at 2:22 p.m.
The Goodguys Southeastern Nationals will close Sunday afternoon, Oct. 31, at
2:22 p.m. with an awards ceremony. More than 100 of the event's top cars will be recognized in award categories including Trick Truck Pick, Speedway Motors Homebuilt Pick, Flowmaster American Thunder Award, Meguiar's Magnificent Masterpiece Award, Lincoln's "Red Hot" Hot Rod Award and YoungGuys Pick.
