Jason Meyers, Jonathan Davenport and Jimmy Phelps Visit Victory Lane Saturday Afternoon during Friday's Postponed Portion of the World Finals
Jason Meyers, Jonathan Davenport and Jimmy Phelps shared the podium in Victory Lane Saturday afternoon during Friday’s postponed portion of the Lowes Foods World of Outlaws World Finals presented by Bimbo Bakeries and Tom's Snacks.
Friday’s World Finals racing action was postponed due to inclement weather and was completed Saturday afternoon.
In the World of Outlaws sprint car feature, championship point leader Meyers, of Clovis, Calif., claimed his third career win at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Starting on the outside pole, Meyers took over the point position coming to the stripe on Lap 8. After assuming the lead he never looked back, leading the remaining 18 laps of the 25-lap feature.
The most exciting race was for second position, as Joey Saldana and Daryn Pittman traded positions throughout the feature. Saldana made a last-lap pass on Pitman to finish in the second position. Pittman came home third followed by Donny Schatz and Tim Shaffer rounding out the top five.
The race saw two cautions with the most impressive yellow coming on Lap 10, when Jac Haudenschild and Sammy Swindell got together, sending both cars flipping down the frontstretch.
Meyers began the feature 92 points ahead of second place Schatz who finished fourth.
The eight-lap sprint car heat races were won by Paul McMahan, Saldana, Lance Dewease and Sam Hafertepe Jr.
Brian Montieth emerged victorious in the C- Feature. Dale Blaney led the field to the checkered flag in the B-Feature, while Hafertepe Jr. claimed the win in the Sprint Car Dash to earn the pole position in Friday’s A-Feature.
After winning his heat race earlier in the afternoon, Davenport, of Blairsville, Ga., cruised to his first victory at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in a World of Outlaws Late Model Series feature race.
Davenport previously won two other events at The Dirt Track, his most recent win coming in August in FASTRAK Late Model Series competition. Davenport executed a daring pass to the outside of leader Tim McCreadie on Lap 10, putting him in the lead for the final 30 laps of the late model A-Feature en route to his victory. McCreadie held onto the second position until his car suffered a right-rear flat tire with just three laps to go, taking him out of contention for the win.
Rick Eckert finished the feature in second, Steve Francis came home third and Darrell Lanigan and Dan Schlieper rounded out the top five in a race that included three cautions.
World of Outlaws Late Model Series points leader Josh Richards, of Shinnston, W.Va., started the feature 22 points ahead of second-place championship-contender Darrell Lanigan. Richards started 15th in the feature event and finished in the 12th position. Lanigan finished fourth and is just six points away from taking over the points lead.
Davenport, McCreadie, Dennis Erb Jr., Eckert, Francis and Schlieper won the 10-lap heat races for the late models, while Jared Landers, Gregg Satterlee and Dale McDowell topped the 10-lap late model B-Features.
In Big-Block Modified action Phelps, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., took home the victory in the caution-filled feature.
The race was slowed by 14 cautions, most of them due to tire failures. All but four cars in the 28-car field visited the pit area for flat tires in the 30-lap A-Feature, including race winner Phelps.
After assuming the lead on Lap 9, it looked it as if Tim Fuller had command of the race until a tire failure on Lap 28 allowed Phelps to take the point position coming to the stripe on Lap 29. After claiming the top spot, Phelps held off a hard-charging Danny Johnson to claim his first victory at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Johnson held on to finish second and Gary Tomkins, Brett Hearn and Kyle Strickler rounded out the top five.
Coming into the A-Feature, Matt Sheppard, of Waterloo, N.Y., held an 80-point lead over second place Phelps in the championship point standings. Phelps’ win now puts him within striking distance of Sheppard, just 22 markers behind. Sheppard was in position to finish well until a flat tire on Lap 25 took him out of contention, relegating him to a 14th place finish.
In the Big-Block Modified C-Feature, Billy Pauch crossed the line first to take home the win, while Dale Planck and Vince Vitale claimed victories in the two 10-lap B-Features.
