With a lap of 28.192 seconds and 191.544 mph, Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, captured the pole for the Bank of America 500 during Bojangles’ Pole Night on Thursday.

“This was huge and a huge shock. We just have not been qualifying good this year,” said Gordon. “We haven’t qualified this well in Charlotte in 10 years. Today the way it was going I didn’t think we had any shot at this pole.”

This is his 69th career pole and his eighth pole at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Carl Edwards qualified second and AJ Allmendinger claimed the third starting spot.

A full starting lineup for the only Saturday night race in the Chase is available here.
