When thinking of Charlotte Motor Speedway what comes to mind? Fast cars? High octane fuel? Burnt rubber? How about giant furry animals racing? That’s right, fur is sure to fly Tuesday night when several area mascots compete in racing’s version of “The Fast and the Furriest” during round eight of the Kangaroo Express Summer Shootout Series.

Mascot Mania will pit Charlotte-area mascots against each other in an intense head-to-head battle on the treacherous frontstretch quarter-mile oval. Lug Nut, the World’s Fastest Mascot, will look to defend his home turf as the mascots compete in equally prepared go-karts provided by Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Among those scheduled to join Lug Nut in the annual Mascot Mania Night race are: Sir Purr of the Carolina Panthers; Rufus Lynx of the Charlotte Bobcats; Chubby of the Charlotte Checkers; Homer the Dragon of the Charlotte Knights; and Tim E. Gator of the Kannapolis Intimidators. Monkey Joe of Monkey Joe’s Party and Play Center will also be competing, along with a rare appearance from Lug Nut’s girlfriend, Lugette.

Prior to the mascot race, the colorful characters will greet fans on the grandstand concourse.

In addition to Mascot Mania, it is also Kid’s Poster Night. Children who bring a poster they have designed will be judged, and the winner of the competition will receive two tickets to the Circle K Back-to-School Monster Truck Bash on Aug. 14.

The night will also feature a full slate of Legend Car and Bandolero racing. Gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action beginning at 5:25 p.m. and opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m.

The 10-week Summer Shootout Series runs each Tuesday night through Aug. 10, and tickets are just $7 for adults, $3 for kids 6-12 and kids under 6 are admitted free. All tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free.

The speedway’s Summer Food Drive continues this week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Fans who bring canned goods to the Summer Shootout during the month of July will receive $2 off the purchase of an adult ticket.  All canned goods collected will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte, N.C.
