NASCAR Star Geoff Bodine to Race for Share of $1 Million Purse in the Legends Million at Charlotte Motor Speedway
NASCAR star Geoff Bodine has signed on to race for the largest U.S. Legends purse in grassroots racing history. Bodine will compete for a share of the $1 million payoff behind the wheel of the Florida Alzheimer’s Association car in the Legends Million at Charlotte Motor Speedway July 15 - July 17.
With 18 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins, a 1986 Daytona 500 victory and the 1982 Rookie of the Year award to his credit, Bodine is recognized as one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers and will bring great racing skill and experience to the Legends Million.
“Bruton Smith has created a great opportunity to race and a $1 million incentive to go for it. Hopefully we’ll do well and people will cheer for us,” said Bodine, 61. “I really applaud Bruton and Marcus Smith for having the idea for this Legend Car race. I think it’s fantastic for the boys and girls who regularly race in the series.”
The star-studded event will feature Legend Car Series regulars, up-and-coming drivers and the sport’s top stars in a 100-lap dash for cash. The only other domestic auto racing series that compete for a $1 million purse are the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide and IndyCar Series.
The Legends Million will be telecast nationally Saturday night, July 17 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on SPEED. The program will include live coverage of the 100-lap A-Main feature and taped highlights of Thursday and Friday nights’ action. The A-Main winner will take home an unprecedented $250,000 with the final spot in the feature assured a $10,000 payout.
For the Legends Million, Bodine’s car will showcase his commitment to helping those in need. He will carry a special paint scheme for the Florida chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and has pledged to donate his winnings to the organization to help Alzheimer’s patients in the state.
“The only way my friends got me to agree to run in the Legends Million was if I could give the money to a charity,” said Bodine. “I’ve been involved in a lot of charities over the years and want to influence people who do good things. I hope we’re able to help those affected by this terrible illness.”
Bodine’s first experience in a Legend Car came in a celebrity Legend Car race in 1997. His son, Barry Bodine, went on to win the national championship that season. To get ready for the Legends Million, Bodine is working on the car loaned to him by Legend Car Series competitor Carlos Moore, planning several test sessions and will be running a few Legend Car races to shake down the car.
