With a time of 28.793 and speed of 187.546 mph, Ryan Newman earned his ninth pole in 19 races at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, leads all active drivers in poles at Charlotte Motor Speedway. David Pearson holds the record for poles at the famous 1.5 mile superspeedway with 14.

"It was a great lap. I ran the high line which I've never done in qualifying here before," said Newman. "It tells you how much things have changed, the tires, the race track, the cars, to be able to do something different than I've always done to create that ultimate fast lap.

"It's great to have the U.S. Army on the car this weekend for Memorial Day weekend and the Coca-Cola 600," Newman continued. "It is an honor to represent those soldiers."

Newman will share the front row with Kurt Busch. Martin Truex Jr. will roll off the grid from the third position. Kasey Kahne will start fourth and Jimmie Johnson fifth. See the rest of the lineup here.
