Second Chance at Round Four of Summer Shootout Series a Success at Charlotte Motor Speedway
After a rainout forced officials to postpone all racing action on June 28, Round Four of the Summer Shootout Series was finally in the books Monday night as Tyler Green, Tom Pistone and John "Matt" Murphy IV were among the feature winners at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Green, of China Grove, N.C., stayed out of trouble to claim his third win of the season in the Legend Car Pro division.
David Ragan, of Concord, N.C., and Green swapped for the top position for the first five laps, while the current point leader, Sean Rayhall, of Austell, Ga., picked up four positions moving into fifth place. After a caution for a spin by Evan Swilling, of Cohutta, Ga., Rayhall fell back on the restart before colliding with Gray Gaulding, of Statesville, N.C., sending them both to the end of the longest line.
Green and Ragan continued to battle for the lead before officials had to call a green, white, checkered finish after seven total cautions. Green was lucky enough to be in the lead before the restart and held off the second and third place cars of Ragan and Charlotte, N.C. native, Zac Kittle.
In the Masters division Pistone was able to battle through the field, after being charged with an early caution, to take the victory in an action packed feature event.
Pistone, of Mooresville, N.C., was able to take the lead away from early leader Jeff Green of Owensboro, Ky., on Lap 2. However, that lead did not last long as Pistone lost the handle on his No. 72 machine and spun by himself, which sent him to the back of the field.
Green held the lead for the next 10 laps before Kevin Foisy of Ottawa, O.N., Canada, capitalized on a Green mistake on Lap 12 to capture the lead. As the action at the front of the field was taking place, Pistone was able to work his way through traffic one lap at a time towards the front.
Lap 15, Pistone once again caught the leaders as he worked his way past Green and Foisy to take the lead. After a Lap 18 restart, Foisy was able to challenge Pistone for the lead, which resulted in Foisy spinning on the frontstretch.
Green was able to give one last run at Pistone on Lap 19 as he drove underneath of Pistone for the lead but Pistone motored back on the inside as he raced to the victory. Pistone was followed to the line by Green and third place finisher Bruce Silver, of Davidson, N.C.
In an exciting Bandolero Bandits feature event, Murphy overcame a spin to win his first race of the season.
Murphy, of Charlotte, N.C., started the race on the outside of the front row and battled side-by-side with pole-sitter Kodie Conner, of Kannapolis, N.C., taking the lead coming out of Turn 2 on the second lap. Fellow Charlotte native, Carson Ferguson, quickly took the second position away from Conner as he set his sights on Murphy.
The top four were nose to tail in the following laps as Ferguson inched even closer to Murphy trying to take the lead away, but spun coming out of Turn 4, bringing out the caution on Lap 7. On the restart, Murphy received heat from Austin Green, of Concord, N.C., but Layton Sullivan, of Gaffney, S.C., began to battle with Green, stealing away the second position. Green tried to take back second place, causing contact that sent Sullivan spinning as a car slammed into him to bring out the yellow for a second time.
Once the field took the green, Ferguson quickly made his way back to the front, cracking back into the top five on Lap 13. At the front, Green closed in on Murphy going for the lead as Murphy spun around on Lap 15 coming out of Turn 4. Ferguson took advantage, moving to the top spot as a caution came out for a second car spinning. Officials reverted back to the last completed lap, sending Murphy back to the lead.
In the closing laps Ferguson fought to chase down Murphy, but ran out of time as Murphy claimed the checkered flag. Ferguson settled for second and Green came home in third.
Other feature winners included Josh Morris, of Fredericksburg, Va., in the Legend Car Young Lions division; North Carolina native, Zachary Dabbs, in the Bandolero Beginner Bandits division; Kyle Hall, of Charlotte, N.C., in the Legend Car Semi-Pro division; and Kaz Grala, of Westborough, Mass., in the Bandolero Outlaws division.
