Senator McCain and Governor Bredesen Meet With Media: Also this afternoon, the Grand Marshal for today's Coca-Cola 600, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, and Honorary Starter, United States Senator John McCain of Arizona, made an appearance in the Time Warner Media Center. Governor Bredesen noted, "I think these kinds of events are great things in our country. People from all across the country come together. And I got a chance to be here. This is Memorial Day weekend, and let's remind people there is a reason for this weekend. While we are out watching these races, we want to take a moment to make sure we are thinking of members of the armed services who have lost their lives in defense of our nation, to pay our respect and honor to those who are serving in our armed forces. I'm proud to be here."
Senator McCain noted, "What I find especially wonderful is the incredible generosity of the city of Charlotte and NASCAR to the men and women who are serving in our military. I also had the opportunity to meet with wounded veterans a while ago who are here. The appreciation and affection of that the people feel for these veterans is very heartwarming. "
Gillette Announces Fast Cars And Super Stars Series: In an afternoon press conference, Gillette announced a new television series that will feature the NASCAR Gillette Young Guns drivers who will be training and instructing 12 celebrities on how to drive and race a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race car. The series, "Fast Cars & Superstars - Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race", will air on the ABC television network on June 7 at 8pm. Making the announcement were Roush Fenway driver Carl Edwards and World Wrestling Entertainment Champion John Cena, who is one of the celebrity drivers.
"All the Gillette Young Guns really had some great feedback," said Cena. "They were all open for some comments and questions. Carl [Edwards] kind of helped me and was one of the guys to really kind of focus with me on execution and driving when it came down to performing."
In helping make the announcement, Edwards noted. "He is pretty good. We had a lot of fun. We really did. I tried to come up with a strategy to be fast at the end. I was supposed to lead him around the track and I was going to go ahead a little bit when we got on pit road, and let him catch up to me. I was looking in my mirror and trying to figure out where he was and then he came flying by me 100 miles an hour faster and got in front of me. He is definitely very aggressive."
The format for the show will feature a celebrity being eliminated each week until a Grand Champion is crowned. The Gillette Young Guns participants are Edwards, Ryan Newman, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray and Kurt Busch. Among the celebrities racing will be singer Jewel, actor William Shatner, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, NFL star John Elway, NBA star John Salley, and NFL coach Bill Cowher.
