Humpy Responds to Immunization Story
In response to a published report that congressional aides were instructed to be immunized before attending NASCAR events during House Homeland Security Committee fact-finding trips, Lowe's Motor Speedway President and General Manager H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler released the following statement:
"The very idea of immunization is laughable. It's like taping your ankles to go to the mailbox. This is not some third- or fourth-world country. As a matter of fact, never in the 50-plus years of NASCAR has there been an outbreak of any kind at an event other than a few headaches because somebody's favorite driver ran out of gas or maybe a morning hangover."
Former Speedway Public Relations Director Passes
Longtime motorsports publicist Bobby Batson passed away on Wednesday at his home in Concord, N.C., after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 66. A public memorial service will be held to celebrate his life at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Concord.
Batson became Lowe's Motor Speedway's public relations director from 1974 through 1976 when he accepted a similar position with Atlanta Motor Speedway. After that Batson worked with several sponsors in the motorsports industry - mainly the Chattanooga Chew and Swisher Sweets brands where he was national accounts manager. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081
