Bank of America 500 Pit Note #18
NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductees Selected as Bank of America 500 Grand Marshals – In an afternoon press conference held in the Time Warner Media Center, members of the 2011 NASCAR Hall of Fame class talked about the honor.
Inductees appearing were Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett and Bud Moore; representing Lee Petty were grandsons Ritchie, Timmy and Mark Petty.
Bobby Allison talked about the honor: “Well, I have to say that it was a tremendous thrill and honor. I was hoping, but still had to realize it may not happen for awhile. I was just so honored when my name was called. I felt like a million dollars again.”
Ned Jarrett related how it felt for him to be selected: “It’s a huge honor, no question about that. When the NASCAR Hall of Fame announced several years ago that they were going to do it, I thought maybe someday I might be able to get in there. I didn’t think it would be this early. I do appreciate those who voted for me. I wanted to live long enough to be able to get in. I am truly honored to be included in this class with Bobby Allison, Bud Moore, David Pearson and Lee Petty.”
Bud Moore also felt fortunate to be selected: “Well, you know, it was a big thrill for me. Really, I was like Ned. I didn’t think I was going to make it this trip. I figured we would make it along the way sometime. But going in with Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Ned Jarrett and Lee Petty… Bobby drove for me, and we won a lot of races over the years. It was amazing, though, for them to put me in the NASCAR Hall of Fame like they did, and especially on the second round. I was so thrilled I couldn’t even talk for a while. Tears came into my eyes. I really didn’t expect it to be this early, but I’m real grateful now. It’s a beautiful thing.”
The Lee Petty grandchildren felt much the same as everyone else.
Ritchie Petty: “It’s unbelievable. We knew our granddaddy was special. Now we know the world thinks he was special. I want to thank everybody for voting for him. We are so proud of him.”
Timmy Petty: “We are really honored and proud of our grandfather. We are all just country folks, and it’s nice to be included with these other guys.”
Mark Petty: “It’s a great honor they voted our grandfather in, and it’s an honor to be Lee Petty’s grandson.”
