Touching Reunion – Katrina Zaleski hadn’t seen her husband for four months, until he surprised her on the pre-race stage for today’s Coca-Cola 600.
Staff Sergeant (SSG) Matthew D. Kilmartin has been deployed to Iraq since February, his third such deployment in seven year with the U.S. Army. He came home this weekend to surprise his wife as she accepted the fictitious “Golden Eagle Award,” supposedly given in appreciation to spouses of active duty military, which was created to set-up this touching reunion between soldier and wife.
After husband and wife tearfully greeted each other, they headed to the Coca-Cola suite to watch the race. SSG Kilmartin will then have his usual 15-day leave to spend with his wife at their base in Ft. Bragg, N.C., before returning to Iraq.
