Robby Unser, nine-time winner of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, will race for Team Speedway in the Pro Class of the Goodguys AutoCross series at next weekend's Goodguys 22nd Southeastern Nationals at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Unser, a talented and hard driving competitor, will be behind the wheel of the Team Speedway 1970 Chevrolet Camaro. Team Speedway, sponsored by Speedway Motors, of Lincoln, Nebraska, is a long- time partner of Goodguys events and a company whose roots are based in racing.
Unser, like his cousin Al Unser Jr., hails from one of America's most storied racing families. The youngest son of Indianapolis 500 Champion, Bobby Unser, and nephew of Al Unser (another Indy 500 winner), Robby began racing go-karts at age 8. By the time he was a teenager, he was racing stock cars, sprint cars and Formula Fords. In 1989, Unser won the American IndyCar Series title driving a car campaigned by Speedway Motors' Jason and Carson Smith. Unser has won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb an unprecedented nine times in a wide range of classes, including Rally, Open Wheel, Truck and Stock. He has raced in the Indianapolis 500 twice, earning the IRL's Rookie of the Year honor in 1998. Unser has also competed in Formula D drifting events, worked as a driving coach and has been involved in "Adventures in Driving" a fictional novel encouraging safe driving.
Unser has had some great success this season racing for Team Speedway. He has earned a first place award at the Goodguys 2nd Indy Nationals in the PRO Class and also a 3rd place finish at the CAM Class Solo Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska. Plans call for Unser to compete in a handful of events for the remainder of the season.
