Since his time as a superstar wide receiver for the NC State Wolfpack in the 1990s, Torry Holt has experienced numerous unique moments: winning a Super Bowl, being named to seven Pro Bowls and being a Hall of Fame finalist are only a few.
Riding shotgun in the Toyota Camry pace car for Sunday's Bank of America 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, however, offered a whole new adrenaline rush for Holt. The Gibsonville, North Carolina, native and Los Angeles Rams legend had never visited the speedway prior to Sunday — and the experience was beyond anything he could've predicted.
"When I was in the garage, (teams) were warming the cars up and getting them ready, and just feeling that power was amazing," Holt said. "You could sense what it's like being out on the track. Being in the pace car in front of all those guys and in front of that crowd is so different from anything I've ever done.
"It's amazing I'd never been here before. Coming to the speedway was always a bucket-list item for me and I'm glad I could finally do it."
Holt said he appreciated the chance to chat with race fans who recognized him for his exploits on the gridiron — which featured a sterling career that saw Holt amass 13,382 yards and 74 receiving touchdowns — before he hopped in the pace car to help lead the field to the green flag.
"The fans have been so nice," Holt added. "I had some come up to me and say hi. Being here at the track and seeing all this has blown my mind. I see why NASCAR is so highly touted."
