Charlotte Motor Speedway named Track Operations Manager Ed Lucas as its 2016 Employee of the Year. Presented annually, the award recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond the call of duty in executing his or her responsibilities.

The winner is determined by a vote of the speedway's executive committee and is selected from Employee of the Month award recipients presented throughout the previous 12 months and voted on by their peers.

"Ed is an incredibly driven individual who is fully deserving of this honor," said Shaun Johnson, executive director of operations for Charlotte Motor Speedway. "His team-first attitude, commitment to excellence and dedication to detail significantly bolsters our department and helps make Charlotte Motor Speedway the premier destination for race fans across the world."

A lifelong race fan and a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Lucas served for eight years in the United States Marine Corps and then attended the University of South Carolina, where in 2012 he earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Management.

Lucas worked as an intern in the speedway's Track Operations department in 2012. He joined Charlotte Motor Speedway as a full-time employee in 2014.

As this year's Employee of the Year, Lucas received a trip to Las Vegas for the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Nov. 30-Dec. 3, among other perks.

"I'm very excited," Lucas said after he received the award. "I've been a fan of NASCAR my whole life, so to be able to work at Charlotte Motor Speedway and be a part of the sport is awesome for me."
