As Charlotte Motor Speedway’s AutoFair returns April 9-11, the legacy of longtime automotive expert Walter “Walt” B. Hollifield will once again be celebrated, recognizing his lasting impact at Charlotte Motor Speedway and throughout the regions car community.
Known for his entrepreneurial spirit and boundless energy, Hollifield passed away last year, after decades of building a reputation as one of the Charlotte area’s most respected automotive experts. His lifelong passion for Pontiac GTOs—widely regarded as the original American muscle car—earned him admiration from collectors, exhibitors and car clubs alike. Through his work in restoration and his deep knowledge of classic vehicles, Hollifield became a trusted voice within the automotive world.
For nearly 40 years, Hollifield was an integral part of AutoFair, contributing to its growth and serving as a valued resource to Speedway Motorsports leadership. A familiar presence on the show field, he could be found walking the line as some of the region's top vehicles were evaluated. Hollifield’s presence helped elevate the event experience for participants and fans alike, leaving a lasting impression that continues today. For his service, the AutoFair’s biggest award was named in his honor. The Walt Hollifield Best of Show trophy – a unique prize coveted by car collectors and enthusiasts alike – has been awarded annually since 2018. Past recipients of this award have included a stunning 1957 Chevy Bel Air, a NASCAR-inspired 1955 Plymouth, a 1969 Ford Torino Talladega and other remarkable winners.
“When you think about AutoFair, you think about Walt,” said Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager Greg Walter. “His passion for cars, his knowledge of the hobby and the way he connected with people helped shape what AutoFair is today. Honoring him through this award ensures his legacy continues to inspire every car owner and fan who walks through our gates.”
Beyond the show field, Hollifield was known for his generosity and commitment to others. He supported causes including the Presbyterian Medical Center Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, while also mentoring fellow enthusiasts and welcoming many into the hobby—and his life. His legacy extends far beyond the vehicles on display, reflected in the relationships he built and the passion he inspired.
Charlotte Motor Speedway will continue to honor Hollifield’s contributions throughout AutoFair weekend, culminating with the presentation of the Walt Hollifield Best of Show Award at the conclusion of the event, alongside other distinguished honors recognizing excellence across categories such as Best of Show, Best of Foreign Car, Best Restoration, Best Truck and more.
